If we’ve had our “ears to the wind” over recent years, we’ve heard plenty about today’s “skill gap” – in almost all industries. It doesn’t take a long online search to find opinions why we are where we are. The reasons are many. Among reasons sited, is “reputation problems”. Let’s pick up there.
Reputation is a matter of perception. If one perceives a particular vocation to be a “bad job” then he/she will likely avoid it. It seems that society has in some ways created the skills gap “monster”, or at least fed it. However, let us understand that we ourselves are the society.
Mike Rowe, ‘Dirty Jobs’ host, offered his thoughts on facebookregarding a status ranking of 100 jobs – from first to worst. I like what Mike had to say.
Let’s make sure we aren’t contributing to the “skills gap” without even realizing it.
